~~~ And the Mystery Layer is ............
another surprise , it wasn't Fern or the other two whom I thought were older. It was one of the black hens , since I have a hard time telling them apart , I'm not sure which black hen by name laid the golden egg. I'm still watching to see if any of the others are using the nesting box.
The guineas have started to nest I think , I haven't found anymore eggs on the ground. I'm going to try to find their nest , but I will leave their eggs. We would love to have baby keets , if nature takes that course. They have earned their keep by eating ticks and potato beetles.
  1. Oh, cute little keets
    would be nice to have.
    Might have to write down the names of the hens that you have a hard time identifying on an index card and pick out something that is different in each one and right that in with the name.
    Is their a spot in there featers or on their beak that can help identify each one or is
    one more light in color, etc.
    Nice to see who it was laying the golden egg.
  2. Funny I was just remembering a story my Mom told of when she was a girl. She wanted to make a pie and had to go out to the chicken coop and wait for the ckicken to lay an egg.
  3. Flassie ,
    I need to pay closer attention to detail of those hens , I just don't have alot of of time , I'm always busy. Great suggestion about the notecards , maybe I'll take time and try that.
    Hi Gemma , So glad to hear from you . What a sweet memory of your Mom waiting for the hen to lay an egg , so she can make a pie.
  4. Sweet and funny memory Gemma.
    I wonder if she ever tried using snow as an egg replacement in the winter months?
    After a little while you should
    be able to recognize them apart
    from each other without the cards.
    God Bless You and Yours!!!
