~ Bumper Cars & Broody Guinea ~

The weather was a little cooler this weekend. So when Little Missy and Little Time came over yesterday ,

they enjoyed some outdoor time playing bumper cars.

Ms. Lame Lucy has gone broody , which means she's sitting on those eggs and trying to hatch them. She's been on the nest for 2 nights now and I hope she hatches a few , we're down to 7 guineas and could use a few more around here. It takes 28 days for them to hatch , so we're looking at Sept. 3rd date for some baby keets hopefully.

This is the nest by the goat lot , it has 9 eggs. I've also removed 3 green eggs over the weekend from this nest , which were hen eggs. One of the hens my friend gave me has decided she likes laying with the guineas (LOL).

This guinea hen has been hanging out in the coop with Lame Lucy , I guess she is her guard , she won't let the chickens near that nesting box. Yesterday I only collected 2 chicken eggs and the green egg from the guinea nest outside the coop. I think the guinea fowl were chasing the chickens out of the coop and away from the broody guinea. I'm not sure what I'll do about that if it continues. Today has been better , I've been checking every few hours and the hens have been laying in the other nesting box. I'm hoping the problem works it self out.

Someone ask me how you tell the female and male guineas apart awhile back. You can tell by their wattles , the pic above is a male , their wattles are shaped different , the males have wattles that hang and move about. The female wattles are smaller and closer to their head and don't move or giggle , they're shaped different too. If you look at these 2 pics , you should see what I'm talking about , although the last pic isn't great quality , you can see the shape of the wattle and how it drops down. It's really hard to get a good close-up of the male guineas , they move around to much.
So , how was your weekend ?

  2. Fabulous weekend - got to spend time with Ben - his parents took him to the sprinkler park in town - tons of fancy sprinklers for the kids to run and play in. Your bumper car kids look like they were enjoying summer too.

Good luck on those babies hatching. I've never had guineas, so that was very interesting about sexing them.

  5. So funny that they didn't
even have to stand in line
and wait or buy a ticket,
to play bumper cars. So cute!!

    Looking forward to seeing the
    new little keets!!

    Weekend went well.

Picked clover and made canned syrup
from your recipe. Yum, Yum! That would make a great tasting candy don't you think or I wonder if you can made lozenges out of that recipe and cook it a bit longer. Or maybe add more sugar or less water.

I haven't started on the pan yet. Been busy with the apples. I made an apple cake loaf and put it in the freezer and canned apple sauce.

    God Bless You and Yours!!!

  6. The kids must be having so much fun with the cars. Happy children!

Your guineas are very pretty. I don't usually think of them as being attractive. But yours are. Hope they let the chickens get to their nest boxes.

  7. Hi Janie ~ Being a Grandmother is so much fun , love it ! I know you miss your grandkids.

Hi JoAnn ~ A sprinkler park sounds like fun , I've never heard of one. Bet Ben did enjoy the park !!

    Hi WolfSong ~ Thanks !
I think everything was back to normal with the chickens yesterday , collected 5 eggs from the nest.

    Hi Teresa ~ Thanks!

Hi Flassie ~ They did have fun playing bumper cars.
Glad you got a chance to make some red clover syrup. Did you use honey and sugar , or sugar only ?

  8. I used sugar, ran out of honey
but didn't know I could make it
with honey. Did I miss someting
    while reading the recipe?

    You can't heat honey without
    losing some of the benefits
    can you?

I'd love to know how to do it
    with honey.

My apple bread was a little
dry so I made french toast
with it and used the syrup
    on it. Yum!

    God Bless You and Yours!!!

  10. Hi Flassie ~ I used 2 cups of honey and 2 cups of sugar when I made the last batch of syrup. The honey had crystalized , so that's why I used it. I don't think you can reheat honey at high temperatures without losing some of the benefits , but Susun Weed makes the syrup with honey.

That apple bread french toast sounds heavenly , bet it was delish with the syrup.

Blogger has a new feature now , or maybe it was already there and I never paid attention to it (LOL) , it's shows at the bottom of each comment before publishing , which blog post the comment is on (YAY)!!
But " Thanks " for letting me know.
