Potatoes & Tomatoes

Well , the end of the summer garden is upon us. We've been busy harvesting the last veggies. I made another batch of spaghetti sauce over the weekend. I found another spaghetti recipe and decided to give it a try , you can check it out here if you're interested ~ http://thechickenkeepers.blogspot.com/2010/09/pizza-spaghetti-or-lasagna-sauce-for.html ~. I had one jar that didn't seal when I canned them , so we had spaghetti last night for supper , this sauce is delicious.

Dh and I dug the first 2 rows of red potatoes Monday , they look very good considering the rain we've had. We still have 2 more rows to dig , so it looks like there will be plenty of potatoes to feed our family this winter.

I love finding the funny shaped potatoes , this one looks like a hippopotamus to me (LOL). I also found a muddy guinea egg in that wheelbarrow of potatoes. I'm thankful it didn't bust , because I'm sure it was rotten.

I graded the potatoes , they are drying out , tomorrow I'll store them. We have several potatoes that will need to be canned , due to bad spots or plow hits.

We have a root cellar of sorts under the back porch , today I raked and cleaned out from under there. There were a few potatoes from last year that had went bad that were still in the cellar. They were dried up , but several had sprouted and tried to grow a few new potatoes before they died. I gathered those up too , I see no reason to waste them , they'll be delicious cooked atop some green beans. I left the door open to let the root cellar air out a bit and the hens decided they would check it out :o)

These are the volunteer potatoes that came from under the porch. They're small , but still edible.
So , how's your week going ?

What wonderful Harvest Bounty for you JoyceAnn! Both potato and tomato look scrumptious! Two of my favorite foods...

I spent my day working around the house and doing some other things...since it was Internation Peace Week I played Peace Songs much of the day and was singing along with them getting in the groove of that Peacefulness which I hope descends our planet soon!

Happy Autumn to You and Yours and Lots of Peace!!!

Hi WolfSong ~ Thanks , we love potatoes and tomatoes too.
I didn't know it was " International Peace Week " , listening to peaceful music sounds wonderful. I think I'll do that today as soon as I finish the outdoor chores. I need to hangout a load of laundry , feed the dogs and get those potatoes stored first (LOL). Have a wonderful day !

Your harvest produced well. Ours not so well due to no rain and such heat but still enough to feed us this winter . Will check out the sauce recipe. Today I am canning pears. Have a very blessed day!

Hi Peggy ~ Thankfully we got the potatoes in the ground early and they did receive some rain before this heat and drought conditions set in. They died back about 2 months ago , but we decided to leave them in the ground until it started getting cooler. Of course it hasn't really started getting cooler yet , but we went ahead and dug them , afraid when it rains , it'll be a flood.

Your Canned tomatoes always
look so vibrant!

Mr. Hippo Potato looks like
a Hippo with Big Lashes. lol!

Wouldn't it be cool to draw an
outline pattern of that hippo and
make a baby toy out of it with material?
Or make beanbags of the shape and
play the Hot Potato game.

Your Welcome for the id of that
plant at your Herbal Spirits blog!

God Bless You and Yours!!!

I didn't have many potatoes come up because of all the rain, and I'm not sure I can actually find them now. I might give it a try this weekend. Looks like your garden did pretty good.
