We haven't bartered really recently but we have bartered - once for a car, another time for cuisinart mini, an ipod, and other things. We belong to a barter group - it is lots of fun and keeps things moving without going into the trash - you never know what someone else might want that you are finished with.
For some reason bartering doesn't seem to work out well for me. I generally get stood up after I do my part, so I try to avoid bartering. Looks like it worked well for you though.
I haven't had an opportunity to swap item for item but I do it for services...my neighbor takes my garbage to curbside all year long and shovels me out in winter and in turn I bake her goodies...and by the salt for the walkways in winter...it is a good trade and we do well with it.
I love to see people bartering and truly hope our systems can come back to that way of life.
