Some years we have bears around here trying to get to our chickens. I contacted the closest park ranger and asked for information on how to handle an encounter with our local bears. One of the suggestions was to keep some metal pots and lids around and bash and clang them together to make a lot of noise while you yell at the bear.

I kept them by the door. I'm not going outside to meet up with a bear but if I met him outside I think having the bear spray is a good idea. I don't go walking in the woods except for our property and I have a dog.

We also made some metal noise traps around the chicken pen that the bear would knock over if he tried to get in the pen. One night a bear jumped down from a tree to get in the pen and landed on what looked like a sturdy landing spot, but it was a bunch of badly stacked metal stuff that all collapsed and made a terrific racket. The bear hasn't been back. I have other old metal heat duct pipes leaning against the back of the chicken coop that will fall and make a lot of noise and alert us of something trying to get in the coop.

I hope your bear is afraid of people and will stay away. Our neighbors confronted a bear that had set off one of their noise traps, but the bear wasn't afraid even after they shot at it to scare it away. It just stood there looking at them all yelling and screaming at it and finally turned around, climbed the fence and left.

My daughter hit a bear in the head with a dog food pan. It was a small young bear that got in the chicken pen because she had forgot to lock it up before dark while I was away. She didn't know the bear was there until she saw it in the coop when she went out to lock up, so she just picked up the pan and hit the bear. Then she chased the bear around the property in her car. Man, that must have been a funny sight. She said the neighbors probably thought she was nuts, driving around the property honking the horn. LOL

I was horrified to hear she hit the bear, but I guess you do what you have to and she said it was little. That was too close. I really don't want to meet any bears. Hope you and the children don't see any of them either.

I like Mother Earth news too.
